Spiritual Living

Chapter 17

Why Do We Suffer? (And how to fix it)

Now, how can we have suffering?

And it is said that we have suffering because we are not in grace. If we are living the experience that where we are in grace, the spiritually living in a crazy, screwy, nutso World that spirituality is wholeness, if we are living in wholeness, if we are living in grace we actually don’t have problems.

Everything is good everything is more than good it is great.

Nature is taking care of everything. It is again that the experience of being in the zone all of the time and somebody in the zone is never complaining. They are in the zone it cannot get better.

If you want to see a fabulous example of this go on YouTube and look at Sarah Hughes when she wins the Gold Medal for the Olympics, I think
it is in the 2002 Olympics that is, she just falls into the state and even she says, halfway through, she realized what was going on

What an amazing example of someone just absolutely inflow. Perfectly inflow with divine grace. Now, so go watch that.

Now it is said that, not being in grace, not having the awareness is the cause of all our problems. In Sanskrit the term is xxx xxx and what it means is it is a mistake of the intellect and here is the diagram that shows xxx xxx.

It shows you this awareness, becoming aware of itself in wholeness in Sam Hita and it says that as this happens and it- through a symmetry breaking which means, it just breaks wants and then it breaks twice and then it breaks four times and then it breaks eight times or if it does them in threes, it’s one three nine etc. but it just means that there is a sequence. That is what symmetry breaking means.

it just means that there is a sequence and in that it eventually tumbles out into what we experience as relative creation and the intellect is right there on the junction point and it has the choice it can decide to align it itself with Sam Hita, with wholeness or it can choose to align it itself with the diversity and it chooses you know, coin toss, it just chooses is diversity and when the intellectual choose to align itself with diversity we have made the choice to align ourselves with the crazy, screwy, nutso World rather than spiritual wholeness, rather than life in grace.

And then we appreciate the World and we have all of the experiences that we have had in this lifetime and however many lifetimes we have had life- times. If you believe in more than one lifetime, which to me really makes a lot of sense because then you can justify how a child can be born with a crippling disease and without that whole world is really crazy, screwy, nutso.

Anyway, it is said that if we can remove this, if we can get the intellect to identify itself with wholeness, then we will live in a state of grace and we will be enjoying that state of in the zone, in the moment, that spiritual liv- ing at all times.

[Not sure why that is there but it is that is where it is in the book. It had to be somewhere and we put it there]

Now, just as the intellect made the choice to align itself with diversity and one can culture the ability through experience of transcending and through knowledge, including looking at this chart over and over again, one can start to help train the intellect to identify with wholeness.

like that at any given time we are making choices and some of the choices that we need to- that we make, we do without thinking, we just stupidly do it and how good are those choices.

We live in a crazy, screwy, nutso World. We are making these habit is out of choices. Chances are pretty good a lot of them are crazy, screwy, nutso choices and what we want to do is start taking an active role in helping ourselves do what nourishes us, what fulfills all of life’s purpose and again our goal is to experience as much joy and bliss and love as we- and happiness as- and fulfill our life’s purpose, as we possibly can.

So we need to start asking ourselves, at any given moment when we are making a choice, who are we serving?

so here is a choice that we can make and that is, that we are walking along and somebody jumps out of an alley and he threatens us with a club or a gun or something and he says, you know, “your Money or your life” ...

[And there is a great Jack Benny skit where there is a long silence and the man says, “Well” and Jack Benny says, “Well, I am thinking” and he is trying to make a choice about whether it is his money or his life ...

[I do not put that in there]

... But in any event the idea is that, somebody jumps out and they give us this ultimatum and now, how do you respond?

Now one way that you could respond is out of compassion. What is it that is going on, in this person’s life that has reduced them to this sorry state, whereby they have to put themselves in danger, put others in danger, just for some money? Now maybe it’s drug-induced but maybe it is not. Maybe, I mean, the economy is what it is today and maybe it is- this is all that they can do for a loaf of bread.

There are all these Charles Dickens stories about people who had horrible things happen to them and all they were trying to do, was not die of starva- tion.

So how would you respond if you are the person who is threatened and you view it this way? And how would you respond- who are you serving in that- from that? Then you are serving compassion and you are serving God and you are serving everyone but what if you decide that youre Bruce Willis and in action adventure or Harrison Ford and your job is to take this guy out?

And then who are you serving? you know, are you- if you believe that everybody needs to be punished then you’re serving this belief that punish- ment is the be-all and end-all and not taken into account that by punishing this person, you’re going to get the same Karma back again. Which means that you are going to get hurt because you hurt somebody because what we do- what goes around comes around and what if you decide that your response is that you are terrified and you are shaking? Then in that case you are serving fear.

so this same scenario, many different ways we can serve many different things within us and what we want to start doing is choosing to be aware of who we are serving and what we are serving and whether that is a part of us we really want to encourage are not.

Let us say you are traveling across the Mojave Desert at 3:00 AM and God knows why but somebody put out a traffic light and you can see the next Country in every direction and there is no traffic in any way and you have a red light. What are you going to do?

Now here is the question- the question that we are asking right now is, not what are you going to do? But who are you going to choose to serve? What are you going to choose to serve? Are you going to choose to serve that it is a red light and you cannot violate a man-made law and therefore you are going to sit there with your engine running and looking and reduc- ing the available oxygen in the world? Because you cannot go through his red light because youre- it is a fear-based you might get a ticket or simply because you were spinelessly trained, this is what you do? You could be a cockroach, you could be a rat, you could be any number of unintelligent beings, you could be trained to sit it and wait at a red light or answer to a ringing bell, the whole Paslov- Pavlov’s dog, “Ring the bell, they come and eat thing.” you could be that and you could be- or you could decide to go through it because you are in a hurry and you really have to go to the bathroom or you could decide that it’s inane and you’re going to go through it or you could- I mean there is a whole bunch of things and the point is, when you come to these moments in your life, rather than just by habit doing what you have done, you want to start becoming aware of who you are and what you want to do with your life and what your purpose is and what your legacy will be.

however old you are right now, it’s a good idea to start thinking about the legacy that you would like to leave to those who are- who remain once you’re gone and what do you want to? Do who you want to leave a legacy? That he always did what he was told or he stood up for what he believed was right or already had the underdog party tried to fix things or he hurt people.

You know there is a story in one of the ancient texts and it makes a refer- ence to one man who was a King at some point in time and in- of all- in this whole man’s life, there must of been many many things that he must has done. He must have loved, he may be did kind things, he may be did- it does not matter. The only reference to this man is that, apparently he saw a baby drowning in the lake or river one time and he laughed. And the story is or the point of it is that is how bad he was that watching a baby drown, he laughed.

Now, that is all that is told about him. That is that king’s legacy it is that he did this one thing. Now, maybe he did it because he was laugh- he laughed because he was nervous, he was terrified, he did not know what to do about it and it maybe because he was stupid and purely evil but that is not the point, that is the legacy that is known.

If there is one sentence, that is going to be said about you and the annals of time and for those who remember you, what you want that legacy to be? He waited patiently at a red light at three a.m. in the morning? He cursed the darkness? He upheld discrimina- discrimination? He supported something intelligently? He rallied with the crowd, the best of them.”

What do you want to be? What do you want to be? This is your choice. In fact there is a story in a Book that I have read ...
[It is in the reference and in the end]

... and the story is a- the book is a factual account of this person who had the experience of being dead for eight minutes and then being brought back to life and it’s a very interesting book. I am not necessarily recommending that you read it ...

[But Return from Tomorrow, by George Ritchie]

... but what happens is, when this person dies, he meets Lord Christ and he has- and several things happen, one of which is, he has a quick glimpse that says, “the reason why he is meeting Lord Christ is because of his con- firmation or something” that is the angle he is chosen and it is actually said that when you pass away who you meet is- determines what tradition you belong to because God can present himself in any way to you and so why not choose the one that is most comfortable ...

[Do I want to go there?]

... I once had the experience of Divine Mother. I was in the kitchen and was looking at this picture and one of the things that I do is, connect people to Divine Mother and so I was having a conversation with Her and I was just kind of an on and I said, “why do you talk to me in English?” It was just kind of an odd that she could- she did that and she said this word, that I can’t even begin to repeat and I had no idea what it meant but it was a very interesting word and it had flavors and it- because I did not know what it meant, I could hear these flavorless and there were parts from very ancient Mesopotamia kind of that part of the Middle East and it had other qualities about it and it was just an amazing word but just saying that one word was the most obvious thing.

She made it so obvious that- the reason she speaks to me in English is, “because that is what I understand.” I am not bilingual as much as I would like to be. So in the same way when one passes away, one meets that as- pect of Divinity that one is familiar with.

In any event in this particular book, what happens is his whole life is flashed. It is as if on a movie screen and he is watching it as well and he is very aware that there is no judgment being passed from God, from Lord Christ side. There is no judgment being passed on any event in this man’s life, although he is feeling embarrassed about certain things have come up or feeling bad about certain things. That is something that he is project- ing, not something that the Divine is projecting, which is an important point to realize but after this whole movie of his life has been shown, Lord Christ turns to him and says, “what did you do with your life” and he said now- he is just been shown this whole thing which is way more than he could possibly remember, so he is not been asked what’s the event of his life were and so, and he is this young kid and he is 20 to the time and- or something like that and he tries to think of what’s been done and he says, “I earned my Boy Scout Badge” and what the Lord does is say, “that glorified you.”

So when you are thinking about what you want your legacy to be, keep the big picture in mind.
